Steam reforming

Steam reforming is a process aimed at producing hydrogen, carbon monoxide and other important compounds from hydrocarbon fuels such as natural gas.

The most important equipment in this process is the “Reformer” which reacts steam at a high temperature with the fossil fuel. For example, reforming with methane steam is widely used in industry to make hydrogen, which in turn is widely used in important basic chemical processes such as ammonia production. Therefore steam reforming is often used in plants where ammonia, urea and other fertilisers are produced.

The reactor where the reforming reaction occurs is often armoured with a refractory lining using hexagonal mesh and anchors.
